Mini Digger vs Micro Digger: Which Do You Need?

The difference, in plain terms

A micro digger is the smallest class, under roughly 1 tonne. A mini digger usually means 1 tonne and up. The trade-off is simple: a micro digger wins on access, a mini digger wins on capability.

Our 0.65-tonne L600 micro is 690 mm wide and fits through a standard gateway, digging to about 1.1 metres. It's ideal for tight gardens, confined spaces and light domestic work. Our 1-tonne L1000 mini is 930 mm wide, digs to 1.66 metres and reaches over 3 metres, with more digging force for trenching, foundations and general groundworks.

If every job is tight and light, the micro is the sensible choice. If you need depth, reach and power, and can get a slightly wider machine in, the mini does far more. Many buyers who expect to grow into bigger jobs choose the mini for the headroom.

Cost and running differences

A micro digger costs less to buy, less to transport and can move on a smaller trailer. A mini costs a little more but earns it back on any job beyond light garden work, because it digs deeper and faster. Both of ours are quick-hitch compatible, so either can run buckets, a breaker, an auger, a ripper and more.

Use the comparison table below to weigh the exact figures side by side, and if you're still unsure, our ROI calculator shows how quickly each pays for itself on your typical jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mini digger better than a micro digger?
Neither is better, they suit different jobs. A micro digger is better for tight access and light domestic work; a mini digger is better for depth, reach and heavier groundworks. Choose based on your access and the jobs you take on.
What's the weight difference between a mini and micro digger?
A micro digger is under roughly 1 tonne (our L600 is 650 kg), while a mini digger is around 1 tonne and up (our L1000 is 1,050 kg). The extra weight gives the mini more digging force and stability.
Which is cheaper to run?
A micro digger is cheaper to buy and transport and uses less fuel, but a mini digger gets more done per hour on bigger jobs. For light work the micro is more economical; for regular groundworks the mini usually works out better value.
Are the machines new or used?
Every machine is brand new and built to order, not ex-hire or second hand. You get a clean history, no hidden wear and a full 12-month warranty from day one.
How much does a mini digger cost?
Because we sell factory-direct, prices start well below a comparable dealer machine. A micro digger sits at the lower end of the range, with 1 to 2-tonne machines costing more as digging depth and power increase. All prices include VAT and free delivery.
Do you deliver across the UK?
Yes. Every machine is delivered free to your door anywhere in mainland UK on a dedicated transport service, usually within 4 to 6 weeks, with updates the whole way.
Is finance available?
Yes. Finance options are available so you can spread the cost into manageable monthly payments rather than paying the full amount upfront. Get in touch and we'll talk you through what's available.
Can I add attachments?
Yes. Every machine is quick-hitch compatible with buckets, rippers, breakers, augers, thumbs and more, added at checkout so they arrive with the machine.
