Removing a tree stump by hand means hours of digging around the root ball, cutting through roots, and eventually levering the stump free. A mini digger cuts this down to minutes for most domestic-sized stumps.

How digger removal works

Rather than grinding the stump down, a digger bucket works around the root ball, severing smaller roots as it goes and using leverage to rock the whole stump free once enough roots are cut. This leaves a hole ready for backfilling rather than a ground-level stump that will eventually regrow.

What size stump needs what size machine

Small to medium garden trees are usually manageable with a 0.6 tonne micro digger, especially where access is tight. Larger, more established trees with a deeper root system often need the extra breakout force of a 1.0 to 1.2 tonne mini digger to free the stump without excessive digging around it.

What to check first

  • Check for underground services near the tree before digging
  • A toothed bucket cuts through roots more effectively than a smooth edge
  • Large stumps may need the hole backfilled and compacted afterward to avoid future settlement
