Mini Digger for Sloped Garden Terracing
Cutting a sloped garden into level terraces means moving significant amounts of soil from the upper part of the slope to build up the lower sections, which by hand is one of the most physically demanding garden groundworks jobs there is.
Why a digger changes the maths on sloped ground
A mini digger can cut into the higher ground and redistribute that soil to build up lower terraces in the same session, rather than the multi-day process of hand-digging and wheelbarrowing material across a slope. Getting each terrace level also matters for retaining wall construction afterward, and a digger's bucket control gives a far more consistent finish than hand levelling.
Sizing for terracing work
Most domestic garden terracing suits a 0.6 tonne micro digger, particularly on smaller plots with narrow access. Larger gardens or steeper slopes needing more soil moved benefit from the extra bucket capacity of a 1.0 to 1.2 tonne mini digger.
- Plan terrace levels and retaining wall positions before starting to avoid re-digging
- A machine with good tracks and stability matters more on sloped ground than raw digging power
