A mini digger is straightforward to operate at a basic level, but a handful of safety practices make the real difference between working confidently and creating unnecessary risk.

Before you start digging

Always check for buried services using a cable avoidance tool or by consulting utility maps before digging in any new area. Assess the ground for slope and stability, since a machine can lose traction or tip on uneven or soft ground, particularly with the arm extended.

While operating

  • Keep the machine's swing radius clear of people and obstructions at all times
  • Never work underneath a raised bucket or attachment
  • Reduce speed and digging force on slopes rather than working at full power
  • Keep bystanders at a safe distance, particularly children who may not understand the danger

Training worth doing even without a legal requirement

Even on your own land where no certification is legally required, a short operator training course covering safe controls, ground assessment and attachment handling builds genuine competence far faster than learning entirely by trial and error.

See our licence requirements guide for when certification is legally required, or our beginner's guide for what to expect learning the controls.
