Mini Digger Bucket Sizes and Capacities Explained
Bucket size on a mini digger is not just about how much material it moves per scoop. It also affects breakout force, how the machine handles in tight spaces, and how well it copes with harder ground.
Bucket capacity by machine size
A 0.6 tonne micro digger typically runs a bucket around 0.024 cubic metres, suited to precise, smaller-scale digging. A 1.0 to 1.2 tonne mini digger runs closer to 0.045 cubic metres, balancing capacity with manoeuvrability. An 1.8 tonne compact excavator handles a bucket around 0.074 cubic metres, moving significantly more material per pass.
Bucket types beyond size
- A standard digging bucket with smooth edges suits general excavation and trenching
- A toothed bucket bites into harder or compacted ground more effectively
- A grading bucket, wider and shallower, levels and finishes ground rather than digging deep
Matching bucket to job
A narrower bucket digs deeper, cleaner trenches but moves less material per pass, while a wider bucket clears ground faster but is less precise. Most owners keep at least two bucket widths on hand for different stages of a typical job.
