Petrol vs Diesel Mini Diggers: Which Engine Suits You?
Engine choice on a mini digger affects running costs, maintenance and how the machine performs under sustained heavy use, and the right choice depends heavily on how often you plan to use it.
Petrol engines
Petrol engines are generally lighter and cheaper to buy, and start reliably in cold weather without the glow-plug delay some diesel engines need. They suit occasional or lighter use well, such as domestic garden and landscaping work, but tend to be less economical under sustained heavy load over long hours.
Diesel engines
Diesel engines generally deliver more torque at lower revs, which suits sustained digging and heavier attachment use, and are typically more fuel-efficient across long working days. They tend to cost more upfront and are usually found on larger machines in a range.
Which to choose
For a micro digger used occasionally on smaller domestic jobs, petrol is often the simpler and more cost-effective choice. For a machine that will be run daily on paid contracting work, diesel's efficiency and durability under sustained load usually pays for the higher upfront cost over time.
