Whether a mini digger will actually fit onto your site is often the deciding factor in choosing a machine, more so than dig depth or bucket capacity for many domestic jobs.

Standard UK access widths

A standard single domestic doorway is typically around 760mm to 810mm wide. A standard garden gate is usually similar, though older or narrower side passages can be tighter still. Measuring your actual access point before ordering is always worth doing rather than assuming based on general figures.

Machine widths by size

A 0.6 tonne micro digger is typically around 690mm wide, narrow enough for most standard doorways and gates. A 1.0 to 1.2 tonne mini digger is wider, around 930mm, which fits most standard gates but not always a single doorway. A 1.8 tonne compact excavator is wider again and generally needs a proper driveway or site access rather than a garden gate.

What to check before ordering

  • Measure your narrowest access point, not just the widest part of your garden or site
  • Account for any obstructions like bins, downpipes or fence posts that narrow an otherwise adequate gap
  • Consider whether the machine needs to turn a corner to reach the work area, which needs more clearance than a straight run
