Mini Digger Insurance: What You Actually Need
A mini digger is not automatically covered under standard home or business insurance, and most owners need a specific plant insurance policy to properly protect the machine and cover the risks of operating it.
Plant insurance
This covers the machine itself against theft, accidental damage, and fire, similar to how motor insurance covers a vehicle. Given that mini diggers are a known target for theft due to their size and value, this cover matters more than owners sometimes expect.
Public liability insurance
This covers damage or injury caused to third parties or their property while you are operating the machine. If you are working for clients or on sites other than your own land, most contracts will require you to hold a minimum level of public liability cover before you are allowed to start work.
What is often missed
- Transit cover while the machine is being moved on a trailer, which is not always included in standard plant policies
- Attachment cover, since buckets, breakers and augers are not always automatically included under the main policy
- Business interruption cover if the machine breaking down would stop you earning
