Mini Digger Dig Depth and Reach Explained
Dig depth and maximum reach are two different measurements that often get confused, and understanding both properly is what stops you buying a machine that cannot actually do the job you need.
Dig depth vs maximum reach
Dig depth is how far below ground level the bucket can reach when digging straight down close to the machine. Maximum reach is how far out horizontally the boom and arm extend when fully unfolded, which is a different figure entirely and matters more for jobs like reaching across a wide trench rather than digging straight down.
Depth by machine size
A 0.6 tonne micro digger typically reaches around 1.2 metres deep. A 1.0 to 1.2 tonne mini digger reaches around 1.8 metres. A 1.8 tonne compact excavator reaches around 2.4 metres. These figures matter directly for jobs like septic tank installation or deep foundation work, where the required depth rules out smaller machines regardless of other factors.
Why this matters before you buy
Buying a machine that falls just short of the depth your typical jobs need means either working around the limitation constantly or renting a larger machine for those specific jobs, undermining the value of owning your own equipment.
